HIV/AIDS STATUS AND TRENDS IN VIETNAM. | |
10:36' AM - Thursday, 05/11/2009 | | OBJECTIVE: To describe the status of and trends in HIV infections in
defined populations in Vietnam. METHODS: Surveillance was started in
eight provinces in 1994, expanded to 12 in 1995 and to 20 in 1996, and
to 30 provinces in 2000. Sentinel populations were sexually transmitted
diseases (STD) patients, female sex workers (FSW), injecting drug users
(IDU), tuberculosis (TB) patients, antenatal women and military
conscripts. Samples were collected twice a year for high risk and one a
year for low risk populations. Yearly sample size for each site was 400
for high risk and 80 for low risk population. RESULTS: The overall HIV
epidemic in Vietnam comprises of different epidemics. It is primarily
associated with injecting drug use, but its extent is highly variable
throughout the country. Overall, HIV prevalence is increasing in all
target populations. HIV prevalence among IDU increased from 9.4% in
1996 to 29.3% in 2002. HIV prevalence among FSWs increased from 0.6% in
1994 to 6.6% in 2002. Since 1998, there has also been a rapid increase
of HIV infection among FSWs in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. HIV
prevalence among STDs increased from 0.5% in 1994 to 2.9% in 2001. The
increase of HIV prevalence rates among younger age groups of IDUs and
FSWs since 1998 suggests an increase in HIV incidence rates among these
populations. HIV prevalence among antenatal women is still low, under
0.5%, but also increasing. CONCLUSION: Vietnam's HIV epidemic is
predominantly and rapidly increasing among IDUs. However, the HIV
prevalence rates among FSWs and STD patients are on the rise and are
still very low among antenatal women and army conscripts. More
effective and appropriate interventions are urgently needed to slowdown
HIV epidemics in Vietnam. Keywords: HIV, prevalence, trend, sentinel
surveillance.
