Opening the first site for opium addiction treatment by Methadone in Ha Noi | |
03:29' PM - Thursday, 11/02/2010 | | On the morning of January 1, 2009, in Ha Noi, the Ministry of Health joined force with Ha Noi People’s Committee to open the first site for opium addiction treatment by Methadone in the Tu Liem District medical center in My Dinh bulding area , Tu Liem, Ha Noi.
The opening was attended by the Minister of Health, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Trieu; Vice-president of Ha Noi People’s Committee, Mr.Dao Van Binh; Health Counselor – of the U.S. Embassy in Viet Nam, Mr.Mechael Iademarco; Administrator of Vietnam HIV/AIDS control, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long; UNAIDS representative to Vietnam, Mr. Eamonn Murphy; representatives of some INGOs in Vietnam; representatives of Departments of Ha Noi; leader and staffs of Tu Liem District people’s Committee; journalists and patients involved in treatment.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister of Health, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Trieu emphasised that the event showed the concern of the Party, State, and international partners for the cause of HIV/AIDS prevention and control in Viet Nam. He also suggested the People’s committee should direct all their departments and branches to cooperate in implementing the program in their locals and prepare for implementing treatment in the other 5 prospective sites of the city to ensure that in 2010 all the six sites in Ha noi have been able to receive patients for treatment. He also said that the treatment must be conducted properly and according to the following regulations of the Ministry of Health: patients must be treated appropriately, safely and effectively; especial care should be taken in the preservation and distribution of Methadone to advoid losing the drug. Trieu also thanked all the representatives of the ministry, departments and other relevant partners in the implementation of harm reduction activities in general and the implementation of the pilot project on opium addiction treatment by methadone in particular. He also thanked all the international organization for helping Vietnam in the recent past years.
