What is the connection between HIV and gender inequality? | |
01:39' PM - Tuesday, 20/10/2009 | | | Although there are currently more men living with HIV (PLHIV) in
Viet Nam, women are uniquely vulnerable to HIV transmission and
HIV-related socioeconomic hardship. Women are physically, socially and
economically more vulnerable to HIV transmission than men because of
biology, gender inequality, economic dependence, and social
discrimination. Women also share a disproportionate burden for caring
for PLHIV.
To reduce women’s HIV risk, the underlying socioeconomic drivers of
the epidemic – gender inequality, poverty, lack of economic and
educational opportunity, lack of legal and human rights protections –
must be addressed. UNAIDS Viet Nam supports the mainstreaming of gender
and rights-based approaches into the design of HIV prevention and care
programmes and advocates for equal access to prevention, treatment and
care. Total hits:
